BRAZILIAN CHRISTMAS

Despite how exhausted you are when you return from ‘vacation’, leaving almost all your things back (your room, your bed, your bathroom, your clothes…), packing your things without any logic even if it takes you hours studying the weather and doing hypothetical plans to keep the right things (we have to be honest, we never do it right), etc. travelling is so worthy for what you see and learn, what you remember about places and people you meet in the highway. Rewarding experiences, in which we discover unforgettable places and curious anecdotes and then we resume in NEVER AGAIN! Or I HAVE TO COME AGAIN! Either so, the only truth is that I love travelling!!

I would like to open this travel section telling you about my Christmas in Brazil, yes, Brazil. While here in Spain you were frozen, I was far far away up to 30ºC with my flip-flops. Surreal but it was really an experience.

So let’s begin with this incredible journey…

We arrived early to the Brazilian city of Sao Paulo, though we are in December, here is summer (I know it’s been this way like forever, but it is weird for me even if I think it from here…). There are my first Christmas in summer and it’s… different.

Huge skyscrapers and lots of offices, luxury malls and Ibirapuera park (the biggest one, created in 1954), define the city. It’s nice to have a walk and you also have to visit Cidade Jardin shopping centre, which includes a helicopter shop in the top of the building. It is amazing!

The following day, we landed in Iguaçu; it has one of the most beautiful world’s natural wonder, the waterfalls. They consist on 275 jumps up to 80m high, fed by the flow of Iguaçu’s river. The 80% are from Argentina and the 20% remaining are Brazilian. They said ‘Argentina got the waterfalls but Brazil the sights’, the truth is that both sides are awesome.
We start from Foz do Iguaçu (Brazil). The landscape is spectacular and the waterfall’s size overwhelming. It seem like it can be better, but the Iguaçu National Park (Argentina) is not only huge (you have to walk for about 6 hours to see it), but is also beautiful.
I really recommend visiting both sides of the waterfalls to everyone; it’s worthy to see this amazing landscape. (PS: your documents must be clean and well cared because you have to cross Argentina-Brazil frontier a few times)

Rio de Janeiro is a very famous city; it has different reputations. It’s Dangerous, funny, poor, rich… but first of all very unequal. But it is also a city you must know. The Corcovado and Pao do açuzar; don’t leave you indifferent for the size of the first one and the Río Bay sights (One of the prettiest bays of the world my grandfather used to say).
I still have no words for the Reveillon; and still also assimilating the fact that I lived a New Year’s Eve in Copacabana. The party, fireworks on the beach y crowds of people in the same place and moment make that night unforgettable, at least for me, because I think I will remember it forever.
Everyone in white, December 31st on the beach, caipirinha and fireworks… Is there anything better?

Paraty is a little fishing village in the State of Rio, which has beautiful coves. It is a pity because when we were there, it was raining all the time and walk through the town was too difficult. The historic roads are made of stones and when the street is wet they are a little dangerous for tourists. Nevertheless, the village is kind of dreamy, full of white houses with doors and windows of bright colours. People are charming and the coves, if you rent a boat for a couple of hours you can see that they are beautiful. You must take the boat and stop in one or two coves so that you can swim and relax in the middle of nowhere with clean and pure water.
Bonito, in Matto Grosso do Sul, is a natural landscape with amazing sights and bright colours. The red soil, green grass and blue of the sky are difficult to forget.

My adventure there and I highlight adventure because you must live it, was very fun. The hotel, in the countryside, with bungalows and swimming pool that has a shower like Robinson Crusoe’s and parrots on the trees, was just perfect.
The activities we did there, after signing ‘under your responsibility' clause (which command some respect), were nothing more nor less going down to the Blue Lake Cave where apparently they found a kind of white shrimp (no joke…) so that you can not put cream or insect repellent, thereby no one kills any lifestyle… The cave has a slippery floor and curious blue tempera water. The other adventure was snorkelling in the river, with diving suit and snorkel, without photographs for keeping my feminine dignity, and seeing fishes as big as my head. I am looking forward to do it again, doesn’t matter the river!!
What I remember the most of Salvador de Bahía, sorry but is like that, is the hot weather. Horrible! But the city is very interesting because of the poverty and the cultural contrast. It’s a very unsafe place, like Río but once again is a city you must known and a city you can visit in a couple of days.

Pelourinho square with its typical pastel-coloured houses is the most idyllic place, and the most curious thing is ending in a singing Mass with a procession of black people wearing white clothes. (Because in Salvador they are really black, as coal, and I am the opposite, white as a wall. I never felt so tourist!!)
Trancoso is paradise… Imagine: exotic beach, sun, clean water, and hammocks in the private side of the hotel, piña colada and Mathew McConaughey in the hotel next door. Yes, true story.

That was my day by day during 4 wonderful days. And the Mathew story; true. I saw him everyday running on the beach and showing his tanned body on the Brazilian beaches and hanging out with his children, like in a movie, but in real life.
The Beach was one of the best I have ever seen in my life and every word I write here cannot ever explain it. If I can choose, I would go ALWAYS to Trancoso beaches.
And like everything in life, the end comes and we come back to Madrid in the middle of January, exhausted and irreverently tanned for the winter, but with a great adventure lived to talk about and never forget.
